January 23 to March 15
360,000 umbilical cords were cut today.
A deer has been struck by a car and met its demise. What emerges from our hands never leaves the body. Everything we create repeatedly translates its vulnerability. Our work addresses bodies in the aftermath of events: bodies that exist after irreversible change, after conditions have already been ‘decided’. This exhibition lingers with the irreversible.
It attends to bodies that are passed over and brushed aside, to lives that were never fully acknowledged as worthy of care; it remains as a state of being. How we differentiate between bodies, deciding which deserve attention and which do not, ultimately mirrors how we evaluate and treat ourselves. An abandoned helmet grew skin and gestated life.
Glass and ceramic salvaged bodies from decay.
Lanternflies crushed to death rebirthed into steel.
From the artist: "I paint out of the memory of a sensation or from visual material that manifests itself in my imagination. When there is a need for more heightened realism I work from personal photographs and live models. Through this process I discuss and explore issues of sexuality and self. I manipulate the human form to explore women’s endurance and tenacity. I want to depict women facing everyday misogyny with dignity and grace, while also considering the oppression of our gender."
Tyler O'Grady and Avery Schuster have collaborated on a show, to explore the dichotomy between nature and urban/domestic objects. Both artists paint from life to create a triangular relationship between themselves, the objects they are studying, and the viewer. Their subject matter represents contemporary life while referencing a long standing history of still life painting. Through careful attention and interpretation, each artist is drawing focus to the diminishing practice of observation in our everyday lives.
