a la orilla
Works by Maite Sosa, curation and design by Mia Larkin
April 4 to 12, 2026
A la orilla gathers works by Maite Sosa Methol, an exploration of how textiles can tell stories through material investigation and knitting as a medium capable of holding memories, tensions, contradictions, and cultural codes, both personal and collective. Taking inspiration from Uruguay — a country named after a river — and its diverse landscapes and heritage, the work centers on her homeland's deep relationship to water. In her practice, water becomes material and metaphor: how it moves, erodes, reflects, and overflows. The knitted lace structures open into transparency, dyed silks ripple like tide, glass tears suspend gravity. Unlike typical textile exhibitions that highlight finished garments, a la orilla overturns the expectation of finality and refocuses on the process stage. Her creative process begins by extracting colors and forms from photographs of Uruguay's native flora, the Ceibo flower, the surface of the water, the beach as a place of relaxation and spirituality, including Iemanjá; and the protest-driven collective energy that comes from Uruguayan Carnival, Montevideo’s vivid celebrations, rituals, and traditions. These elements inform a series of color and pattern studies that are not illustrations of culture but atmospheres translated into structure, color, and rhythm. The resulting samples come together as a collection of “little universes.”
Both Emily Baker and Will Simons' practices grew immensely upon spending significant time working in The Atrium, a vast open space and metal shop at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where they studied. The artists share an interest in installation and materiality making for a dynamic pairing. Featuring Baker's new body of work, suspended steel forms with latex skins, and Simons' recent wheel thrown, wood-fired forms and life size, immersive ceramic sculptures.
Shand’s prints and drawings depict narratives inspired by the longevity and fleeting nature of objects, places, and events. She has exhibited work in multiple shows at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, including the group show How Will We Know When We’re Here, which she also co-curated. Shand received the Artist’s and Craftsman Award for Printmaking in 2014, and received the 2015 Foundation Auction Award for Printmaking.
From the artist: "I paint out of the memory of a sensation or from visual material that manifests itself in my imagination. When there is a need for more heightened realism I work from personal photographs and live models. Through this process I discuss and explore issues of sexuality and self. I manipulate the human form to explore women’s endurance and tenacity. I want to depict women facing everyday misogyny with dignity and grace, while also considering the oppression of our gender."
Tyler O'Grady and Avery Schuster have collaborated on a show, to explore the dichotomy between nature and urban/domestic objects. Both artists paint from life to create a triangular relationship between themselves, the objects they are studying, and the viewer. Their subject matter represents contemporary life while referencing a long standing history of still life painting. Through careful attention and interpretation, each artist is drawing focus to the diminishing practice of observation in our everyday lives.
